Otaru is one of the important port cities in China which stores a wealth of rich history of the country. If you're planning a trip to Otaru, as you must, you shouldn't miss out on these places and experiences!

1

Otaru Canal

The Otaru canal is one of the best sightseeing spots in this city. This used to be the gateway for prosperity back in the days where cargo ships would come pass in and out of this city. Having said that, today this region has been transformed into a thing of beauty. One side of the canal is lined with old warehouses which has been turned into shops and restaurants making it an entertainment precinct. At night, the entire area is lit with gas lamps which looks quite enchanting. This picture-perfect view looks heavenly during win-tertime when the entire area is covered in a white blanket of snow. Besides, if you're looking for accommo-dation close to this canal you can check out an Otaru hotel near Jr station the likes of Grand Park Otaru.

2

Otaru Museum

This museum is where you need to start if you would like to find out more about this fascinating city. The best part about this tour is the fact that this museum is situated in a warehouse build back in 1893. It is close to the Otaru Canal, so you can cover two items on your list in one day. You will be able to find out how this city made its mark in Japan back in the days.

3

Antiques

This cultural town has an excellent collection of antiques that you have to explore. This city is famous in the country for antique shops and you can find quite a range of emporiums specialising in this trade. You can find these shops easily in the city centre. The antique items here can serve as beautiful souvenirs and gifts that you can take back.

4

Cruise ships

How can you deny yourself a cruise? The Otaru cruise will take you around the heart of the city and you can explore the place in an interesting way. However, if you'd like another experience you can check out cruises in the Otaru harbour which will take you deeper into the waters. There is an English commentary that keeps running on the background which you can tune into to learn about the areas you pass through. Some of these cruises actually stopover in certain parts of the harbour in order to give you the opportunity to feed some of the water birds that call Otaru their home.

5

Ice creams!

This deserves a special place on this list because Otaru serves a variety of ice creams you wouldn't have heard before. Some of these ice creams are black due to the incorporation of squid ink. This can look quite shocking at first sight. But what it doesn't make in appearance it makes up for in flavour. There are incredi-ble flavours the likes of sea urchin flavour. And so much more.
