Things to do in Yala National Park Sri Lanka- The green island gem

Being a wildlife paradise in Sri Lanka, this National Park has many things for you to do while you are here.

1

Take a walk on the beach

Most coastal areas that come under the Yala National Park territory is open to the travellers. During your tour of the National Park there are only a few places that visitors can have a break at and catch a breath. One of these places is the main beach areas that are open to the general public and is also a site where an old resort used to be on, but was washed away by the tsunami. When you walk around in this place you will still be able to see the destruction caused by the tsunami.

Safari rides

The main attraction of the National Park is obviously the safari ride which will take you around the area and will give you memories that you will cherish for a lifetime. The one thing you must keep in mind when you are on a safari ride is that you have to be patient and spot the animals. You cannot hurry and you must respect the animals as the National Park is not a zoo but it is a place for you to look at the wildlife as they go about their day.

3

Bird watching

Being home about 90 different kinds of birds of which half of them migrate to the area from various parts of the world, Yala is a great place to go bird watching. Some of these migrant birds include the spoonbill, the waterfowl and the small wader. You will also be able to spot flamingos, pelicans and various other kinds of water birds frequently at this National Park.

The Yala National Park is found right in the centre of a rural village in Sri Lanka. The people of the village depend on banana plantations, paddy field plantations, vegetable farming and more as their main source of income. To explore this village, you could rent a bicycle and ride around the area.

6

The culture

The Yala National Park is home to many historical and religious landmarks that hold a religious significance to the locals. Once you are done exploring the wildlife part of the area you could spend some time exploring the historical and religious sites and attractions found in and around Yala. For some of the attractions, you might have to travel for an hour or even two, thus, keeping aside a day just for this would be a wise thing to do.
