If you have a pet dog, you know that he or she is an important part of your family. Like any other family member, you want your dog to be safe at all times.
As a responsible pet owner, you have to protect your dog from external threats. These might be dog- fights, rowdy kids or people and diseases.
Here are some tips to keep your doggo safe and secure.
You need to protect your dog from the heat during summers. Some breeds such as Bulldog, Boxer and Pug are sensitive to heat. Their bodies heat up very quickly. They are unable to regulate their body temperature. Therefore, too much heat may cause them to pass out. Heat strokes and sunburn occur in dogs due to this.
So if you see that your dog is panting rapidly, take them to a nearby shade. Make sure that he or she is hydrated. Give them adequate water to drink. You can use sunblocks available in the market for dogs.
Make sure that your dog wears a collar. This will indicate that the dog has an owner and is not abandoned. So, if he or she goes astray, people will take the initiative to find the owner. It is also beneficial in case your dog gets lost, unfortunately. The collar will help people identify the dog.
The collar also helps to keep your dog on track if it is causing trouble or is becoming too interested in other dogs.
Many dog foods have high amounts of sugar and corn. These are called fillers that will fill your pup’s tummy. But, these will not give them the required nutrition. Instead, look for foods that have meat as the key ingredient. Stay away from foods that have unnamed ingredients. You can talk to a vet about what your dog should eat.
Additionally, think before sharing your food with your dog. This is because not all the foods you eat are suitable for your dog. Feeding your dog spicy or fried foods may cause indigestion and obesity. Disease such as pancreatitis, joint pain and even heart ailments are possible.
Keep your pet away from situations or environments where a fight may break out. Observe the behaviour of your dog closely. When your pet is playing with another dog, it might get too exciting. In such a situation, keep your pet away from the other dog.
Most fights are territorial. If a dog suspects someone is entering their territory, they become alert. They might show resistance and eventually try to fight them off. Fights can also start if your dog might do not get what he or she wants. In that case, the dog might take the anger or frustration out on another dog. In such situations, you can spray water on the dogs or make a lot of noise to distract them and stop the fight.
When it is hot, dogs like to play or swim in the water. But you must not assume that your dog knows how to swim. Even if you have a Labrador or Golden Retriever – who can swim – you must be alert when your dog is near water. Observe whether your dog is scared of the water. In that case, do not force it to swim or play.
If you are teaching your pet to swim, start in a shallow pool. Work your way up to lakes or ponds. Get a life jacket for your doggo. This will help you get a hold of him in case he or she is not able to stay afloat.
You have to train your dog to understand your voice commands to prevent tricky situations. In case your pet wanders off into the unknown, they must return to you if they hear a particular command. If you are able to train them properly, you can protect them from dangers.
Some dogs are friendly, while others are not. If your dog is shy and does not get along with other dogs, guard him. This is because the other dogs may start a fight or bite your pet. On the other hand, if your dog becomes aggressive towards some people, keep him away from them.
