The Wheel of Time

The Wheel of Time

Robert Jordan & Brandon Sanderson’s Wheel of Time series is one of the longest high fantasy series out there. I’ve read them all, and while there are fair criticisms for many of the things people do not enjoy. They are some of the best high fantasy books ever written. If you enjoy fantasy, you have to read them eventually. A Wheel of Time T.V. series is being planned as well. As of now though, no release date has been announced.

Lord of the Rings

It should be no surprise to see The Lord of the Rings on any fantasy list. Tolkien’s work has inspired numerous fantasy writers, and many of the fantasy staples; orcs, elves, and dwarfs can all be linked to his writing. Lord of the Rings was made into an incredibly successful 3 film series.

The Kingkiller Chronicle

The Kingkiller Chronicle

Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicle series is an internet favorite for sure. The series is not complete as of now, with only 2 of the 3 planned books released. You should know though that Rothfuss' takes quite awhile to finish books. The Wise Man's Fear, the latest entry, was released in 2011. Fans are currently awaiting the last installment in the series Doors of Stone. A Kingkiller Chronicle movie of the first book Name of the Wind is being discussed, and a director has been chosen, but no release date has been given.

The Dark Tower

The Dark Tower

Stephen King's Dark Tower series is a fantastic fantasy series, where King creates a story built within his universe. As a prolific write, who has released dozens of books. Stephen King's universe is incredibly complex, and incredibly fascinating. I would always recommend any who likes fantasy to read this series! A movie was made based on the first entry in The Dark Tower series called "The Dark Tower".

5

Earthsea Cycle

Earthsea Cycle

Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea Cycle is probably the least popular series in this list, but it really is a unique one. Earthsea Cycle is about a world where there are no continents, merely islands, and where magic is commonplace. We follow a boy named "Ged" as he learns to be a magician, and find his place in this strange world. In 2004 an Earthsea Cycle mini series was released. There were only 2 episodes of it though.
