Known to be one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of Sri Lanka climbing this rock is one of the first things you must to during your trip here. Built by a king who was afraid of being invaded and attacked by enemies, this is an incredible ruin that is found on top of a rock. If you are into the history and culture of Sri Lanka you definitely must not miss out on climbing and exploring the Sigiriya. The climb itself is not that hard but you do need to be in a level of medium fitness to handle it. After the first hundred steps or more you will be able to stop and take a break at each viewpoint and enjoy what it has to offer. Keep climbing on until you reach the top and here you will find the remains of the palace and the Palace grounds. This rock that was created by an extinct volcano and is about 200 metres taller than the area around it. Because of this the view you get will be simply mind-blowing. If you are staying at Sri Lanka resorts in the area the likes of Heritance Kandalama this will definitely be one of the first things people suggest you do.
After you climb and see the view the Rock has to offer get back down and you will be able to explore the town. Just like this popular rock, you will find that the town of Sigiriya also has a few interesting things for you to do. Take a walk around the area and enjoy the local sites while you devour snacks to get your energy back.
This place also requires some climbing but don't worry, it is not as high as the Sigiriya. The Dambulla Rock temple climb will also give you quite an amazing view of the hills, forest and the road found below once you reach the summit. Another name for this place is the Golden Temple and the history of the area and this Temple dates back to the first century BC. Within this Temple, you will be able to find five small cave temples. Time your climb so that you are there until the sunset. Take a look at the sunset view offered from the top of this mountain and begin your climb back down.
Also known as the garden of the white men around the area this is a man-made garden that can be found about 2 kilometres away from the highway in Kandalama. If you have no idea what is the place is about, know that it is just a garden where people study about trees.
If you are put up in Kandalama and you do not mind travelling a couple of hours or even just one hour to explore attractions found in the nearby towns and areas make sure you take time to visit the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.
