Take your car out for a test drive. Whether you have a Ford or an Audi, testing the way your car handles dips and bumps in the road can be a good way to tell whether your shocks are holding up. The suspension on your car should not bob up and down or shake excessively over potholes. The suspension should feel well-planted without looseness no matter what the terrain.
Listen for strange noises coming from the suspension while you drive over rough roads. Bad shocks can rattle and bang if they are worn out. If you drive a Ford, take your Ford into a Ford dealer and get your shocks checked out. No matter what type of vehicle you own, bad shocks should be investigated and taken care of by the dealer or a professional shop.
Park on flat ground and press down on the car as hard as you can. Press on the area where the shock is located; just above the wheels and tires. The suspension should compress slightly and then come to a smooth stop. If the car keeps bobbing up and down when you release your hands, your shocks probably need some attention from your dealer.
Raise your vehicle with a jack and remove the wheels. Inspect the shocks for oil leakage. A good shock should not have any fluid leaking out of it or any type of housing that it is contained in.
