Passports, id’s, social security cards, any piece of paper that identifies who you are and where you come from should be top priority. Bureaucracy has caused these little pieces of paper to be very hard to replace, which is why they should be kept in a fireproof safe in case of emergencies. Saving these from the fire will save a lot of trouble.

An external hard drive with all backup information from your home computer can also save a huge hassle. Having to start over with personal information is hard, along with any work or personal projects that you’ve toiled over for several years. Since almost all home videos and pictures have gone digital, this may be the only pictures you can preserve after the ashes fall.

Sometimes it may seem irrelevant to have cash stored when a credit card works just fine, but you never know when cash will come in handy. Your closest ATM might be far away and chances are your credit card got swallowed up in the fire. A fireproof safe is a great place to stow such things.

This is strictly for insurance purposes, because it allows for insurance to replace some of the belongings that you’ve lost. Many people forget to do this, and lament later when they try to prove to their insurance company what belongings they had that got burned up. Most people keep this video in a safe deposit box.

When all of the above items are accounted for, then it is time to rush for a thing or two that reminds you of home. It is impossible to save too many items, or excessively large ones, so go for the one that has the most value to you that is easy to access.
