Top Things To Do In Kandy, Sri Lanka - Make it a perfect holiday

Kandy is one of the most popular hillside destinations in the country and here are some must-do things when you are there.

1

Visit The Ceylon Tea Museum

Sri Lanka is known around the world for being one of the major contributors of tea. When you are in Kandy, it is a great opportunity for you to visit the tea museum and find out how it came to be what it is today and how it all began. The tea museum and the factory right next to it is about 4 to 5 kilometres away from Kandy. If you are put up at a luxury hotel in Kandy the likes of Kings Pavilion, this trip would probably take you about half a day if you are intent on looking around completely and learning a lot about the tea industry in Sri Lanka.

2

Temple Of The Sacred Tooth Relic

Nobody ever visits Kandy without visiting this temple and if you are roaming around the city you will obviously come across this place and step into it even if it was not pre-planned. Found right opposite the Queens Hotel at the main junction in Kandy, this temple is a huge iconic religious place for the Buddhists in the area. If you are visiting the city and a full moon falls during your vacation here make sure you time the visit and go to the temple on the day of the full moon or the days before it. If you visit this temple during a full moon you will be able to take a look at all the rituals and festivals that happen in Sri Lanka on a monthly basis as this day is a highly religious and holy day for all Buddhists. If you want to avoid the crowds and take a look at the temple leisurely to get great photographs it is better to avoid the festivities and rituals and plan your visit on a week-day that has no religious significance attached to it.

3

If you are a visitor to Sri Lanka and especially to Kandy often you would have visited or heard of the Empire Cafe as a suggestion for one of your meals here but if you re new here, you definitely must visit it. An old cafe which is now a swanky restaurant that has gotten a modern upgrade, this would be a fun visit.

Some types of travellers always love to know about the history and culture of the place when they are visiting it and if you are one of those travellers, heading to the national museum found in Kandy would definitely be something you would enjoy. The life of Sri Lankans that existed before the place was colonised to can be found here. The museum also has 4 temples and 2 monasteries within itself.

The Kandy Lake

If Gregory Lake is popular in Nuwara Eliya, in Kandy this is the lake. Popular not just for its scenic views, this Lake also plays a huge part in the history of the city. This man-made Lake also has a dark past as a king of Ceylon drowned a whole family in this Lake as a punishment for treason. This might be something you would love to think about while you are walking around the Lake leisurely.
