Being one of the lesser-known beach destinations in Sri Lanka Hiriketiya is fast becoming a favourite to both the locals and travellers.

About Hiriketiya

The Hiriketiya beach can be found in the Southern region of Sri Lanka and is one of the latest additions to the list of hipster destinations in the country. Located a few kilometres away from Matara, this beach can be found by a natural bay and thus, the colour of the water you find here is not normal. On one side of the beach you will have no rocks and a peaceful vibe, while, on the other you will be able to spot huge wave breaks and a more thrilling vibe. Since the place is just getting popular, you will not find a lot of crowds there just yet.

Getting there

Getting to the Hiriketiya beach is not as simple as getting to Galle. You will find that no train takes you to this beach and the highway also does not lead you here. You will have to take a Matara bus and get off at Dickwella, which is the closest stop to Hiriketiya. From the bus-stop, hire yourself a tuk-tuk and you will find yourself at the Hiriketiya beach in just 10 minutes.

Accommodation

This beach is easily accessible from most of the Sri Lanka luxury resorts that are found in the South the likes of Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort. You could always spend the day at Hiriketiya beach and get back to your hotel at the end of the day regardless of which nearby beach town it is at. If you are a traveller who likes to stay at simple places you will also find that Hiriketiya has a lot in of comfortable hostels that cater to backpackers.

Surfing

One of the most popular activities that people do on Hiriketiya beach is surfing. You will find surfers in many experience levels when you hang out at this beach, and if you want to try your hand at surfing, you could always rent a surfboard here. The best thing about this hipster beach is that nobody judges you based on how well you surf. If you want to try your hand at surfing, this is a great place to begin.

Yoga

On the other extreme side of activities, yoga is another popular thing to do at the Hiriketiya beach. Since it is not as crowded as the other beaches in Sri Lanka many people head to this beach early in the morning or during the sunset for a bit of a spiritual getaway.
