10 Things We Wish We Knew Before We Went to the Maldives – What you need to know before going to the Maldives

The Maldives is a beautiful tropical country which is made of many different islands and many interesting features that are interesting and exciting.

1

So many islands

The Maldives is made of almost 1200 different islands. Most of these islands are uninhabited. Male is the capital of the country and is also the biggest island among the others. These islands are segregated into different atolls which are popular for various different attractions.

2

World's flattest nation

The Maldives is under the threat of being washed out in the next 50 years to come. Due to global warming and the rise of the sea levels the flattest country in the world is under a threat. The country's elevation is a mere 2 meters above sea level.

3

High and low seasons

There are two main seasons in the Maldives which are known as the high season and the low season. The high season is warm and dry whereas the low season is affected by the monsoon rains and you can expect rainy days.

4

Individual resorts

Due to the high number of uninhabited islands that are in the country, most of the hotels and resorts such as Adaaran Maldives are built on individual islands. Most of the resorts and best hotels in Maldives have their private island and beach which is absolutely delightful.

5

Sand is unique

The sand that you can see in the beaches of the Maldives is unlike the sand you can see a majority of the beaches from around the globe. The sand is made of corals that have been broken down into a million tiny particles.

6

Water sports

If you love being outdoors and the extensive sports that you can try then the Maldives is the place to go to. There are so many different water sports that are available in the country. Surfing, snorkelling, diving, sailing, jet-skiing, water skiing, bodyboarding, windsurfing, paragliding and kayaking are some of the activities that are available in the country.

7

You better love seafood

Being a country that is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and a country where many people depend on the livelihood of fishing, it does not come as a surprise that seafood is one of the most popular food in the Maldives. Most of the food items that you will come across will contain, fish, prawns or other kind of seafood.

8

Islamic Country

Even though the first settlers in the island are known to be Sri Lankan and Indian the country later had many Arabic settlers coming through trading. It was declared an Islamic country in the 12th century and is currently the smallest Islamic country in the world.

9

Alcohol is prohibited

Being an Islamic country you are not allowed to buy, sell or consume liquor in public places, especially in Male. Alcohol is permitted only in resorts and hotels.

10

Conservative

Even though tourism is the most prominent income generator in the country the country is also quite conservative. You would be expected to wear modest clothing when in public and would not be able be in bathing suits or revealing summer dresses. So it is wise to pack cover-ups and t-shirts when travelling to the Maldives.
