Cleaning Rust off Your Gun

Imagine changing a baby's diaper. If you were to leave it on too long, your baby's bum will get a rash! Did you know that the same thing can happen to your guns? If you own a firearm and don't take good care of it, there's a good chance some rust will develop. A rusty firearm is an unpredictable catastrophe just waiting to explode. You don't want to be around when that happens. In fact, you should learn how to prevent the invitation of rust in the first place. Here are some tips how.

Always make sure the gun is unloaded! Check and double check the chamber, remove or lock the bolt open, and never EVER point the barrel at anything you do not wish to destroy!

Apply a thin coat of gun oil to the rusty areas and remove with extra fine steel wool. You don't have to apply harsh pressure.

Make sure you keep oil present at all times while rubbing the rust off. Occasionally, remove rusty oil and examine the surface. When it means your satisfaction, clean off all surfaces. Apply another even coat of oil to all steel surfaces.

Because a firearm can become faulty and dangerous when infected with heavy rust, you always want to prevent it from developing in the first place. Always store your firearms in a gun safe. The dry environment will prolong the life of your weapons. Keep your gun safe's temperature regulated to avoid trapping any moisture inside. Always clean and lubricate your firearms after every use. You'll want to check on them periodically, to make sure rust is not forming. If you do see any sign of rust, clean immediately.

A Timely Matter

A Timely Matter

If you don't catch the rust right away, it can cause pitting to your barrel. When you pull that trigger, you risk the dangers of having the gun itself blow up. This will put you, and anyone else around you, in harm's way. If you are at a shooting range, any person within the vicinity could get injured. You never want to allow your guns to get rusty. At all times, keep them securely stored in a gun safe, and clean them regularly. If you follow these basic steps, you should be able to prevent any rust or corrosion.
