The founders of the JD(U) are Sri J.H Patel, Sri Ramakrishna Hegde, Sri George Fernandez, and Sri Sharad Yadav. The party traces its roots to the Janata Party, founded (in Bangalore) by Sri Jayaprakash Narayan, the stalwart who united all anti-Congress parties during an emergency in Indira Gandhi’s reign. The thought process of uniting and forming the party blossomed while the leaders were confined in the Jail cell in Bangalore for protesting the indirect dictatorship led by the congress leader. The Janata Party was renamed as Janata Dal under the leadership of Sri Ramakrishna Hegde, the then chief minister of Karnataka in 1988. The Janata Dal was split in1999 because of the difference in opinion between Sri J.H Patel and Sri H.D Deve Gowda.

At the time of separation, Sri J.H Patel had Sri George Fernandes and Sri Ramakrishna Hegde supporting his ideologies which included pro socialistic thinking influenced by Sri Ram Manohar Lohia. Later Sri Nitish Kumar joined JDU under the leadership of Late Sri George Fernandes. JDU now is a regional political party in India and Sri Nitish Kumar is taking forward the socialistic principles in Bihar. Its political position is Centre-left operating on the ideologies of Integral humanism, Secularism and Socialism. Today, the JD(U) has a prominent presence in Bihar, especially with leader Nitish Kumar as the Chief Minister.
