The majestic Galle Fort is undoubtedly one of the top attractions in Galle. Your tour in the city will certainly be incomplete without a visit to this glorious site. The Galle Fort, which is also known as Galle Dutch Fort and the Ramparts of Galle, was built way back in the year 1588 by the Portuguese. It was later extensively fortified by the Dutch. Hence to this day, the fort is called Dutch Fort. It was greatly impacted by the Boxing Day tsunami but was wonderfully restored by the government of Sri Lanka.
If you stay at a Galle hotel which offers easy access to the Galle Fort, it will be quite easy for you to explore it. Places like Le Grand Galle are great options to consider in the city.
