4 Ways to Stay Hydrated While Boating

Boating seasons coming up! Dusting off your boat cover and getting ready to hit the lake, you may remember feeling sick after boating last year. Becoming dehydrated is unbelievably easy to do while boating, so listen up and prevent dehydration.

1

Know the Symptoms

Know the Symptoms

Being aware of the symptoms of dehydration can help you remember to hydrate. If you find you are not urinating regularly or are thirsty those are two big signs that you need more fluids. The color of your urine is also a good indicator of how hydrated you are.

2

Stock the Boat

Stock the Boat

Right after you take the boat cover off, stock the boat with a variety of drinks, especially plain old water! Water will hydrate you more than sugary drinks and soda, so focus on coolers full of ice cold water.

3

Rest

Rest

Avoid staying in the water or under the sun for hours at a time. Take breaks, even fifteen minutes, to cover yourself in the shade of the boat. A short rest in the shade can help cool the body down and prevent dehydration. A cool body limits the amount of water the body loses through sweat and breathing.

4

Drink Breaks

Drink Breaks

The entire time you are on the boat, make sure everyone is covered by taking drink breaks. Every hour or more encourage everybody to take at least a swig of water. If everyone has their own water bottle, they may be more inclined to hydrate. Ask everyone to bring their own bottle and, before you leave, slide all the drinks under the boat cover so you don’t forget them.
