Things that Annoy Our Significant Others

A popular bridal shower activity based on the classic American “Newlywed Game” oftentimes reveals which habits of ours annoy our significant others and conversely, which of their habits most get on our nerves. The top three responses to the question, “what is a habit of your significant other that irritates you?” are bad driving, spending decisions, and blatant laziness. Surprisingly, a car could be involved in creating some relationship dysfunction in all three of these categories.

The Pre-Newlywed Game

The Pre-Newlywed Game

You’d be hard-pressed to find a 30-something year old American or Utah woman who hasn’t been exposed to a form of the pre-“Newlywed” game during a bridal shower or bachelorette party. The Newlywed game is a classic game show where a couple is separately asked questions about themselves and their significant other. A couple as a team wins points by correctly identifying their significant others’ pre-recorded response. One crowd-favorite question is: “What is a habit of yours that annoys your significant other?” After watching this scenario play out at many a bridal shower, I’ve identified the most common answers to this dangerous query.

Bad Driving

Bad Driving

The most common response to the question: “what habit of yours annoys your fiancé?” is simply, “the way that they drive.” Men complain that the women drive too slowly, are overly distracted, or are in some other vague way horrible drivers. Meanwhile, the brides-to-be answering this question report that their grooms drive too aggressively. Both parties claim to get sick/nervous when the other is behind the wheel.

Spending Money Conflicts

Spending Money Conflicts

Another habit that has produced frustration for my engaged friends comes in the form of money-spending conflicts. Couples forget that it’s okay for each individual do have different priorities, within reason. My engaged friend once worked herself into such a tizzy over her fiancé’s desire to spend money on his Ford Fusion that she nearly cancelled her wedding.

4

Blatant Laziness

Blatant Laziness

My same friend who flipped out over the Ford Fusion was similarly called out by her husband-to-be in the pre-Newlywed game when he confessed that her more annoying habit was that she is sometimes blatantly lazy. I have heard this response frequently and attribute it to the fact that opposites attract. Couples that are made up of one go-with-the-flow person and one overly organized create balance.

Car Trouble

Car Trouble

One moral of the story from this awkward, albeit educational, pre-marital game is that cars can oftentimes come between an otherwise blissful couple. Men: keep your Ford Fusion out of the wedding photos. And ladies, if he’s going to have another woman, it’s better that she’s his Ford Fusion.
