As one of Sri Lanka's top water sports hotspots and beach Meccas, there's plenty to do in scenic Arugam Bay. Here's a rundown of some of the best activities to enjoy in the area.
Tipped to be one of the island's premier surfing hubs, there's nothing quite like riding the big waves during a holiday in Arugam Bay. Hosting countless international level surfing contests each year, the area is a globally recognized surfing Mecca for the masses. Some of the most coveted surfing spots in Arugam Bay include Elephant Point, Peanut Farm Beach, Baby Point and Main Point while surfing conditions are ideal during the period from June to August. This is also official tourist season in the east coast.
Climbing and hiking enthusiasts based in Arugam Bay should not miss the chance to hike up to Elephant Rock. As one of the best lookout points in the region, Elephant Rock occupies the fringes of the bay and affords spectacular views of Arugam Bay from its vaulted vantage point. Although the road up to the summit is not well-marked the entire journey takes less than half an hour so visitors can reach the top of Elephant Rock in about 20 minutes. Elephant herds are also known to occupy the area so refrain from visiting the site during the early morning and late afternoon hours when the gentle giants are known to pass through the area near the rock.
Whether one is a casual food lover or a hardcore Asian cuisine enthusiasts, signing up for a food tour of Arugam Bay's top local restaurants is an absolute must. Known to offer Vegan and vegetarian diners a host of exciting options, the ready availability of fresh seafood means the area is also a popular haunt for seafood dishes. Pizzas made in wood-fired ovens, as well as traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry meals, are all up for grabs during a culinary tour of the area. Must-dine venues in Arugam Bay include Blue Ocean, Cili, Flo and Stay Golden while those who wish to venture down to Arugam Bay specifically for a food tour can hop on an air taxi in Sri Lanka by local operators the likes of Cinnamon Air or a similar domestic carrier.
When it comes to enjoying some downtime in Arugam Bay, there's no better option than heading out on a two-hour lagoon cruise. The pristine and beautifully maintained lagoons in the area include Urani and Kottukal which both serve as thriving habitats for countless wildlife including elephants and crocodiles. What's more, Yala National Park is also nearby so those who prefer to engage in a wildlife safari are also welcome to do so at one of the country's leading sanctuaries and safari hubs.
While most beachgoers are unaware of the many cultural highlights occupying Arugam Bay, all take the time to visit the Muhudu Maha Viharaya, which is visible from the beach itself. Ideally situated on a sand dune, paying homage to the Buddha sculptures and relics at this ancient temple is a great way to spend an afternoon.
