Real Excuses for Bad Driving Habits

Nowadays, it is hard to commute anywhere without running across a driver who does something that enrages us. It is instinctual to dub that person a jerk, an idiot, or worse. However, sometimes we jump to this conclusion a bit too hastily. The following are examples of times that other driver’s bad habits have a decent excuse.

Parking in two spots

Parking in two spots

Oftentimes the driver who parks their car badly is inconsiderate, but there are also two exceptions to vindicate the accused bad parker: 1) The car next to them parked horribly, leaving them no choice but to squeeze into a poor spot, or 2) snowfall covered the parking spot lines and it turned into a free for all.

Cutting you off

Cutting you off

Before getting annoyed that someone cut you off, think about the specific scenarios. Were you driving too slowly in the passing lane so that they could not otherwise get around? Did the car turn out in front of you from a parking lot or side street? Maybe they have been waiting to turn out onto that road for a long time and became desperate.

Headlights go out; that is a ticket-able offense (also it is sketchy driving home in the dark without headlights), so people opt to turn on the car’s brights. Perhaps the vehicle’s operator is driving someone else’s car and don’t know how to get the headlights on a regular setting.

Slow Acceleration

My friend and I took a ride in her new Ford Escape the other day. We were stuck behind another car who kept speeding up the limit, then slowing down suddenly and inexplicably. After about 5 minutes of agony, the driver finally found the street that she was looking for and turned. My friend scoffed, “Ever heard of GPS, lady?!” not realizing that not every car is equipped with voice activated navigation as is her Ford Escape.

Before you lose your cool on the road next time, consider the possible extenuating circumstances. Don’t be the Ford Escape friend and assume that everyone’s driving state is the same as yours.
