If there is one thing that Sri Lanka has always been popular for, it is the golden sandy beaches spread around the south coast of the island.

Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is one of the top beaches in Sri Lanka. Apart from basking in the sun while reading a book or enjoying some street food in Sri Lanka, you get to do many different water sports as well. If you are an adrenaline junkie then you can try surfing or body-boarding which are both extremely exciting water sports. With the high demand, there are several local shops that have been set up by professional and experienced surfers to lend the boards and teach or guide first-timers. With the development over the last few years, the Hikkaduwa beach has also become a party destination during the seasons. The hotels and resorts are known to host some of the most exciting outdoor parties on the island.

Mirissa

Mirissa is also a very popular tourist destination for those who love the beach, the sea and sand. You can see that there is a surfing lifestyle that has built up in Mirissa and it keeps growing larger by the year. With the beach being known as a calm and pleasant strip in Mirissa many people opt to go there in order to relax and wind down with food and music. There is a developing Hippie lifestyle that can be seen in Mirissa.

Galle

Galle beach is quite underrated but it is absolutely delightful. There are many restaurants on the coastline making it a location where you can try many different types of local food while enjoying the breeze and the sun on your skin. The Galle beach is a great place to view the shops that are passing by as this used to be an important harbour in the golden days. A short trip from the Galle beach leads you the Old Galle Dutch fortress. Most Steuart Holidays include Galle in their itinerary as it is a must-visit location in Sri Lanka.

Beruwala

The Beruwala beach plays an important role in the Sri Lankan history as it is known to be the location where the first Muslim settlers came into Sri Lanka. The beach is crowded during public holidays and school holidays as there are many families and children who come to the beach in order to spend time at the beach. The beach is calm and peaceful in the morning hours and you get to witness the boats gone for fishery arriving early in the morning. It is a beautiful sight to see with the Indian ocean and the dawn of the day in the backdrop.

Unawatuna is yet another party destination in the southern part of Sri Lanka. The beach has developed a surfing culture which keeps developing by the day. There are many professional and experienced surfers coming to the area from around the world in order to experience the surfing culture and the lifestyle in Sri Lanka. There have been many developments in the Unawatuna beach over the last few years and to date, it remains one of the cleanest beaches on the south coast of the island.
