Things to Know Before your Maldives Local Island Diving Trip - Knowledge of the waters

When on a holiday in the Maldives, scuba diving is one of the most popular and much-loved activities too. There are a few things you should know before you embark on this diving trip.

1

Certification requirements

Before you can take your 1st dive you need to get certified. The minimum requirement is an entry-level certification you will obtain from the recreational scuba training council in the Maldives. If you have a similar qualification certificate obtained from any of your other travels around the world you can show that certificate and your previous diving logbooks as proof. If you haven't carried these documents to the Maldives then you must show a certified trainer that you are capable of handling yourself underwater. If you already do not have a certificate do not worry as almost all local island resorts the likes of Huvafen Fushi Maldives will have diving schools nearby.

2

Supervision at the diving centre

With the entries on your past diving logbook, you can prove that you are indeed an expert who can dive in similar conditions, but the law in the Maldives requires that you have to do a certification course at a local diving centre. Even if you can prove that you have prior experience in diving you will have to pair up with someone with equal experience. Furthermore, signing up at a diving centre will make all this so much easier as it will make your diving trip more fun. This is because these local diving centres know the best spots in the Maldives. You can ask around in the resorts or in any one of the restaurants in Maldives for a credible diving agency.

3

The diving depth limitation

The maximum depth any recreational diver can go up to 30 metres. There is no exception to this rule at all. If you are an entry-level diver then the maximum depth allowed for you is just 20 metres. If any diver breaks this law, low they will be banned from diving in the Maldivian waters for life as the official website of the tourism ministry in the Maldives clearly says that the presence of your guide will not give you leeway for exceeding the depth.

4

The requirement of a diving centre

When you are on the lookout for a diving centre make sure that it is registered with the ministry of tourism in the Maldives. You can always double-check on the ministry's website. You can also ask around and find out which are the best diving centres in the area.

5

The diving equipment

All diving equipment must be maintained and be in good condition so that they meet the local standards. Every diver must be equipped with the standard snorkels, fins, diving masks, regulators, BCD's, measuring devices, and emergency signalling tools. The local government also asks people to use diving computers. If you are experienced enough to go diving in the night you must carry an underwater torch and a signalling device specially created for the night.
