The best pub in Mumbai you cannot miss

Thinking of doing a pub crawl in Mumbai? You are spoilt for choice. Maharashtra’s state capital is suffused with pubs. If you are thirsty and thinking of chugging glasses of beer, there’s a pub or bar on every main road and some nice, cosy ones tucked away in the inner lanes.

But which is the best pub in Mumbai? Well, tastes vary. To each her or his own. The beer, ambience, the food and the music make it place visiting a place again and again. Some prefer a vibrant and boisterous place, others, a quieter, classy atmosphere.

But in Bandra and Colaba, the best pub is uncontested: it is Effingut. With the best craft beers in Mumbai, lip-smacking food and the most chilled-out ambience, no wonder it’s the favourite bar of the ‘with it’ set.

Blessed with the divine – or devilish – presence of its mascot Borrel (that’s the name of the bearded dude) Effingut offers a wide range of craft beers from ciders to ales, from lagers to stouts. There are sweet variants and bitter ones that range from the mildly bitter to nearly karela level bitter. The pub prides itself on its delicious food, the menu offers a wide variety of starters to desserts.

But let’s be honest here: people visit Effingut for the beers. And the pub offers a staggering array of beers of differing IBUs that reflect the bitterness of the beers. The lower the IBU, the less bitter the beer, and vice versa. Thus ciders and meads are typically sweet (and hence have a low IBU) whereas some of the stouts and ales are quite bitter.

All the beers are Effingut are quite special, but the crowd has its favourites:

Traditional English Ale: For an authentic English Ale experience, this earthy flavour is a perfect selection. It has just the right amount of crisp bitterness mixed with spicy hop flavours.

Dunkelweizen: This is a German delight characterized by its dark colour and malty richness. The creamy and full-bodied brew has the comforting flavour of banana and cloves, which leaves you feeling euphoric. Like most weizen-style beers, it has a grainy and bready flavour underlying the beer.

Hefeweizen: Awarded as India’s best, this Hefeweizen is an escape from the heat outside. The roots of this beer lie in Bavaria and date all the way back to the middle-age. Its light and frothy texture has been a favourite ever since. The taste of banana, cloves and a hint of bubblegum from the yeast fermentation is a German delight.

Peach Ginger Mead: Known to be the oldest drink to mankind, even finding mentions in the ancient Hindu scriptures, this mead is made with 100% organic honey we collect ourselves from the foothills of the Himalayas; it is beautifully balanced with lemon and a zing of ginger. This is a perfect drink for a hot summer day!

Marzen: Traditional Oktoberfest beer, also known as the Marzen, is a very old and popular beer. This beautiful lager, brewed in March and lagered in cold caves over summer, ended up being called as the "March Beer - Marzen".

Indian brown ale: The Indian Brown Ale is one of our master brewer's favourite. It is hoppy, bitter and moderately strong like an IPA but has a beautiful caramel, toffee and dark fruit malt character.

Mango jalapeno IPA: Made in collaboration with Gerorge Jacob, an alumnus of Brewlabs, UK, where our master brewer, Manu Gulati also went to study brewing. The mango-jalapeno collaboration was specially made for Tapped 8.0 and ended up a big hit amongst the beer connoisseurs.

Kokum: A Maharashtrian spice that is known to have many culinary as well as medicinal benefits. The Kokum mead is made out of the variety that is found near the beautiful coastal region of Ratnagiri. The tartness of the Kokum is balanced by the sweetness of honey.

As the night progresses, so does the demand for our great beers. And while every night rocks at Effingut (dry days don’t – ha ha) there are some nights more special than others at Effingut.

Tuesday nights, the pub has a highly popular quiz (at Colaba, especially). We are always surprised at the knowledge of our patrons and end up parting with free beers as prizes

Wednesday night is Ladies Night. They get beers on the house and are quite thrilled with it.

Effingut encourages creativity, and our Thursdays are band nights - local bands and local artists such as Vernon, Nathaniel and many others have performed in our outlets in Mumbai and Pune.

On Fridays, our in-house DJs get into action. With their beats and grooves, they soon get the entire pub tapping their feet and banging their heads. No one is immune to their wizardry.

And on Sunday nights, we go retro. Music from decades past blares, and the crowd gets nostalgic.

So, to come back where we started: find the best bar in Colaba .If you haven’t been here already, make it a point to join us in Bandra or Colaba. Cheers!

Best bar in Pune and it’s for everyone

Best bar in Pune and it’s for everyone

Just a decade ago, pubs and ‘action’ in Pune was restricted to some of the more ‘hip’ localities. That’s where the city used to head out to, over the weekends and holidays.

But now, Pune has become a true partying city, with some of the best bar in Pune. There are pubs that serve beer and other drinks, pubs that play cutting edge music, pubs that offer ‘deals’ to the millennials out to have a good time. There’s a pub or bar on every main road and some nice, cosy ones tucked away in the inner lanes.

But which is the best pub in Pune? Well, tastes vary. To each her or his own. The beer, ambience, the food and the music make it place visiting a place again and again. Some prefer a vibrant and boisterous place, others, a quieter, classy atmosphere.

But the best pub in Koregaon Park and the best pub in Baner are uncontested: it is Efiingut. With the best craft beers in Pune, the most lip-smacking food and the most chilled ambience, no wonder it’s the favourite bar of the ‘with it’ set.

Cheers to the best microbrewery in Mumbai, and the finest cocktails

Cheers to the best microbrewery in Mumbai, and the finest cocktails

Just about two decades ago, our choice in beer was very limited: we had the main, ruling brand that promised ‘The king of good times’ – the one with the blue bird on it. There were a few other sporadic brands, some regional brands and that’s it.
Compare that to today’s situation: go to major cities, particularly Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune and a few others, and you have the problem of plenty. There are microbreweries in Mumbai and in galore, with each city’s residents proudly showing off their favourites.
But what exactly is the definition of a microbrewery? Let’s ask Wikipedia: A craft brewery or microbrewery is a brewery that produces small amounts of beer, typically much smaller than large-scale corporate breweries, and is independently owned. Such breweries are generally characterized by their emphasis on quality, flavour, and brewing technique.
Mumbai has quite a few of its own watering holes and microbreweries. The breweries in Mumbai face two problems: high rentals and space constraints. In spite of that, they are gaining in numbers and reputation.
So the question arises: which is Mumbai’s best microbrewery? Opinions will vary depending on who you ask. But in the two ‘most happening’ suburbs, i.e. Bandra and Colaba, the favourite will be overwhelmingly Effingut.
Probe deeper, ask the regulars what makes Effingut their favourite microbrewery in Mumbai, and the answers will differ: some are comfortable with Effingut cool vibe. They are here every other day – or at least every weekend. Still others love the music the pub plays – an eclectic mix of rock, pop, hip-hop, jazz, Bollywood…all seamlessly blended.
Then, the food alone is worth a visit: a delicious, lip-smacking spread of the choicest starters, main courses and desserts. Effingut prides itself on the quality and variety it offers. Its chefs are always tweaking the taste of their dishes – adding an ingredient here and there to make it spicier and yummier. The pub offers a superb selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.
But regulars visit Effingut for the beers. Some prefer their beers sweeter; others swear that the more bitter the better. In this respect, Effingut doesn’t disappoint: it offers an amazing range of beers of varying IBUs that validate the bitterness of the beers. The ones with lower IBUs are sweeter, the higher number indicates higher bitterness. So meads and ciders are usually sweet (and hence the low IBU) and the ales and stouts more bitter.

At the entrance of all Effingut you can feel the presence of Borrel - its mascot (he is the one with the beard). He has his favourite beers, and chooses wisely from the wide range of craft beers. Effingut prides itself on all its beers, but the regulars have their favourites:

Traditional English Ale:
Regulars swear that this beer offers an authentic English Ale experience. The beer has an earthy, ‘honest’ flavour. Its crisp bitterness blended with spicy hop flavours is much appreciated, making it one of Effingut bestsellers.

Dunkelweizen:
The Dunkelweizen is an enchanting German beer loved for its dark colour and richness of malts. This creamy and full-bodied brew offers the comforting balance of banana and cloves, which leaves the drinker feeling exhilarated. Like most weizen-style beers, this beer has a grainy and bready tang.

Hefeweizen:
Chosen as India’s finest, this Hefeweizen offers a perfect escape from the heat, especially in summers. The origins of this beer are in Bavaria and date back to the middle-age. Its light and frothy smoothness has been appreciated ever since. The taste of banana and cloves with a hint of bubble-gum from the yeast fermentation makes it a perennial hit.

Peach Ginger Mead:
Mead is known as the ancient drink to mankind; it even finds a mention in the centuries-old Hindu scriptures. This particular mead is prepared with 100% organic honey collected by us from the base of the Himalayas; it is perfectly balanced with a zing of lemon and ginger. This is again a recommended drink on a hot summer day.

Marzen:
Marzen is a traditional Oktoberfest beer, made in a very old and popular style. This flavoursome lager used to be brewed in March and ‘lagered’ in cold caves in the summers – hence the name "March Beer - Marzen".

Indian Brown Ale:
This is one of our master brewer's darlings. It is a hoppy, bitter and moderately strong beer much like an IPA, but it has a wonderful caramel, toffee, fruit and malty character.

Mango Jalapeno IPA:
We made this beer in association with Gerorge Jacob, an alumnus of Brew labs, UK the same place that our master brewer, Manu Gulati, also attended to study brewing. This collaboration was undertaken for Tapped 8.0 and ended up being a big hit with the beer connoisseurs.

Kokum:
Kokum is a Maharashtrian spice known for its culinary as well as medicinal benefits. Our Kokum mead is made from the variety found near the spectacular coastal region of Ratnagiri. In this beer, the tartness of Kokum is balanced by the syrupiness of honey. Ginger adds a refreshing and subtle finish.

While every night is a memorable occasion at Effingut there are some extra-special nights. On Tuesday nights, we have the highly anticipated quiz. We are always delighted by the in-depth knowledge of our patrons and end up distributing many free beers as prizes.

Then, Wednesday night is Ladies Night: they get beers on us, and are elated about it. And our Thursdays nights are when local bands and local artists perform.

So next time you want to try out beers, best cocktails in Mumbai and great food, come to Effingut. It’s worth going the distance.
