10 Hacks to Save Money When Planning a Trip to Maldives - Experience paradise on a budget

The Maldives, the perfect and dreamy destination, attracts tourists from different types and many countries. Here are some tips to save money and still have a blast!

1

Plan ahead

This is one of the most important rules to follow should you wish to save money. You will be able to grab some early bird offers! Additionally, once the planning is done, it gives you more time to focus on other aspects which will also contribute to saving cash.

2

Choose resorts closer to Male'

Considering the island is a popular tourist destination, there are several best hotels in the Maldives. Therefore, you will be spoilt for choice. However, should you wish to save some money, it is recommended to go with resorts that are closer to the city like Adaaran Club Rannalhi Maldives, which is only 45 minutes away in a speed boat. The shorter the distance, the cheaper the boat fares!

3

Travel Offseason

Another well-known rule. During the tourist season, there is an increasing demand and therefore, the prices tend to become higher and competitive. Therefore, opt to travel during the offseason where most resorts and activities will be offered at an attractive, discounted price.

4

Exchange currency before travelling

Most resorts and hotels accept US dollars. However, if you wish to travel to the local village and do some shopping, it is helpful to have the local currency Rufiyaa. Exchange rates on the island can be not so profitable for you, therefore, it is recommended that you exchange in your home country itself.

5

Bargain!

Most vendors up their prices strategically when they spot a tourist. However, nowadays, travellers are well informed and aren't easily gullible. If you are on a tight budget, don't be ashamed to bargain! However, if you can afford to spend some extra, try to help out the local vendors by purchasing from small businesses.

6

Compare Prices

Another rule of thumb before finalising any logistics is to always compare the prices- airfares, tour agencies, accommodation options and amenities etc. Make a list or a table and note it down as you find out. This helps you give an idea of everything at one glance and will make it easier for you to decide on the perfect option to go with. Cheaper might not always mean better. Therefore, always do your research well and weigh out the pros and cons synchronously with the prices.

7

Pack in advance

Last minute packing often leads to travellers dumping everything into their suitcases and exceeding their baggage limit. Therefore, pack well in advance. Make a list of items that are mandatory and pack them first- sunscreen, any medications you are on, toiletries, guidebooks, beachwear, slippers, an empty bottle to fill with water, some oral rehydration sachets, a beach sarong and a shawl. Remember that while the resort islands have no restriction on dress codes (though no nudity is allowed), the local villages do- please be respectful of the law and wear modest clothing while visiting them.
