Full of remarkable sights, Yangon is a treasure chest of tradition and culture. With so many places to explore, from beautiful temples to ancient buildings and street food vendors, a visit here is unforgettable. Here is a list of the top things to do in Yangon.

1

Visit the National Races Village

You probably will not have the time to visit every single state and region in Myanmar. A great alternative to that is to visit the National Races Village, which takes pride in providing visitors with an experience of the entire country's diversity. The National Races Village is a collection of homes that belong to the country's different ethnic groups like the Kayah, Chin, Mon, Kayin, Bamar, Rakhine and Shan people. This construction was initiated by Myanmar's Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs. You'll be able to educate yourself on the mix of cultures as well as the traditional lives that are led by the locals. Make sure you also visit the restaurants here that serve dishes from the traditional cuisines of these regions so that you could better appreciate the cultures.

2

Visit the Shwedagon Pagoda

This is the most sought-after attraction in all of Yangon. This massive structure which is 325 feet in height, rests right on top a hill that overlooks the entire city. Visible from almost anywhere is Yangon, the Shwedagon Pagoda is one of the most famous pagodas from all across the world. It is considered to be the oldest pagoda in the world since it is believed to have been built over 2500 years ago. The stupa is adorned with 7000 glistening diamonds, sapphires, topaz, emeralds and rubies all encrusted. Referred to as the 'Crown of Burma' it is a must see on your trip to Yangon. If you're looking for a hotel, Yangon features many great options for you to pick from, such as the Chatrium Hotel Royal Lake Yangon for example.

3

Shop at Bogyoke Aung San Market

Featuring over 2000 shops, the Bogyoke Aung San Market boasts the largest selection of handicrafts and souvenirs for sale in all of Myanmar. Buzzing with both locals and tourists, this bazaar has an old-world charm to its ambience, drawing from the cobblestone roads to the colonial buildings surrounding it. You'll be able to check out various items from Shan shoulder bags to even chilli-coated pig organs. The market has a little something for anyone and everyone.

4

Visit the National Museum of Myanmar

Housing a massive collection of Burmese history, culture and art, the National Museum of Myanmar is a large 5 storey building. Here you'll come across historic memorabilia and ancient artefacts that all relate to the Burmese people's culture and history. The museum has a total of 14 galleries across the building, of which, notable ones include the ancient ornaments gallery and the ethnic cultures gallery. One of the highlights here is the throne room which contains miniature replicas of ancient thrones used by Burmese Kings.
