The Sri Dalada Maligawa has become an icon of Sri Lanka due to its great historical, religious and architectural value. This is the best place to visit in Kandy and it is referred to as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, as it features the Tooth Relic of the Gautama Buddha.
The serene tree-lined path around the lake is ideal for a quiet stroll. If you wish to extend your walk to the Kandy View Point above, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the city.
The big Buddha statue of Bahirawakanda can be seen from almost everywhere in Kandy, and by night it is nicely lit up. Its location high on top of Bahirawakanda hill gives you one of the most fantastic views of the city below.

To the north of the lake and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is Udawattakele Sanctuary, a dense forest famous for its twisting trees, bird-watching and gangs of swinging monkeys. About 80 bird species have been recorded in the sanctuary, several of which are endemic to Sri Lanka.
This bustling market is housed inside an old two-story building where you will find everything that you need. fruits, vegetables, spices and Sri Lankan sweets as well as handbags, shoes, clothes & ornaments.
If you want to travel like a local, hop on a bus and take a tour. Alternatively, if you want to taste rice and curry and other street food, Kandy is a great city to navigate by foot.
