The function of the drive shaft is to transfer the engine torque from a gearbox or differential to the wheels. It must also compensate for all variations in angle or length resulting from manoeuvring and deflection for perfect synchronisation between joints.
Drive shafts for cars with front wheel drive consist of the outboard fixed joint, the inboard constant velocity joint and the connecting shaft. They also include elements such as the anti-lock system ring and the torsion damper. The basic design of the outboard fixed ball joint, the constant velocity joint, dates from the 1930s.
In most cases the inboard CVJ takes the form of a slip joint to allow the drive shaft to follow the movements of the wheel suspension. At the front axle (leading axle) the outboard joint must transfer the torque effectively through a large angle (up to 52 degrees). At the rear axle the angles of the outboard joints are considerably smaller.
Constant velocity drive shafts are exposed to maximum stress all the time that the vehicle is in operation. Alongside the extremely significant displacement angles and translational movement, the joints and bellows must be able to withstand temperatures of between minus 40 and plus 120 °C as well as speeds of up to 2800 rpm. In order to transmit the required torque in all engine speed and velocity ranges with reliable constancy (ideally throughout the entire service life of the vehicle), all components must be maintenance-free.

Wheel alignment, or tracking, is the process of ensuring your vehicle’s wheels are set to the optimum position, as per the car manufacturer’s specifications. Incorrect alignment can result in rapid and irregular tyre wear and can even affect the handling and safety of the vehicle. Wheel alignment problems can be caused by hitting a kerb, driving into a pothole in the road or by excessive wear to steering or suspension components. Over time, the force applied to wheel cylinders causes them to leak or wear away, which can reduce the reliability and response time of your brakes. As an integral part of the drum brake system, wheel cylinders are most commonly situated directly above each wheel, perpendicular to the direction the wheel travels. Consisting of a small Wheel cylinder with a piston on each end, wheel cylinders are at opposite end of the brake line to the brake pedal, so when the pedal is pressed the brake fluid is forced into the cylinders which pushes the pistons out. In turn, the pistons push the brake shoes into contact with the wheel drums, slowing the vehicle through the friction this generates.

The thermostat starts at a closed position when you start the engine to help it reach operating temperature. As coolant temperature rises, thermostat begins to open. The opening allows hot coolant in the engine to flow into the radiator, while the water pump pushes lower-temperature coolant from the radiator into the engine. When the lower-temperature coolant reaches the thermostat container, the expanding fluid begins to contract, closing the thermostat's valve.
During engine operation, though, the thermostat actually never fully closes or opens, but gradually nears either state to control coolant flow, depending on engine operating conditions. This allow the engine to operate at the best temperature. This ideal engine-operating temperature accomplishes several goals: It helps engine oil to lubricate efficiently and to remove harmful deposits. It reduces emissions and gas consumption and contributes to engine performance. Thus, the thermostat has an impact on your engine's health and longevity.

When you are travelling on the road, your engine reaches very high temperatures. Water pumps work by pumping water through the engine from the radiator, which is then recycled back through the coolant system. A water pump gasket works as a seal between the engine and the water pump to prevent leaking and is fundamental to the cooling process. Balancing and alignment are in fact two very different practices and whereas balancing addresses the distribution of weight around the wheel, alignment looks at the position of the wheels in relation to the road and each other. It’s easy to confuse the two, so here’s a closer look at each one and the benefits this can bring to you and your car Wheel balancing ensures that weight is distributed equally around the wheel and that the tyre rotates evenly. This involves adding small balancing weights to the rim which counter weight inconsistencies. If you imagine a set of balancing scales, when you add a heavy weight to one side the scales will tip. If you then add a number of smaller, less heavy items to the other side, the scales will gradually begin to tilt the more you add until finally, when you have added enough smaller weights, the scales will once again level out. Add too many weights and the scales will tip the other way. Although this is a simpler example, wheel balancing works in the same way and if an imbalance towards one side of the wheel is identified, wheel weights are added to the opposite side to even out the distribution of weight. It’s important to address wheels that are not correctly balanced to ensure you receive the best ride comfort. Incorrectly balanced wheels produce a vibration that is felt through the steering wheel when travelling above a certain speed that can cause considerable discomfort over time.
