Must experience roads in Sri Lanka – Drive along the tropical island

Sri Lanka started developing after the civil war ended in 2009 and there is so much to explore in this little island.

1

Before you drive

If you love to go for long drives with the shutters down and the wind blowing in your hair, you are bound to love the driving experience in Sri Lanka. Most of the roads in Sri Lanka are developed to a good state that driving is not a huge hassle. Driving is on the left side of the road in Sri Lanka and for those who are used to driving on the right may find it quite uncomfortable at first but with the time you will get used to it. If you would like to drive around the island you can rent a car in Colombo. When renting a car it is important to do so from a trustworthy company such as Casons Rent a Car Sri Lanka so that you know the vehicle you are getting is in good standard.

Southern Express Highway

There are two highways built in Sri Lanka, one that is connecting the western province with the Southern province and the other which is connecting the Katunayaka airport to Colombo. The Southern Expressway is the longest highway in Sri Lanka and the road takes you on a journey with absolutely beautiful scenery. You get to drive past paddy fields that are bright green and dancing in the wind. The road falls along rocky mountains that make it seem like you are going under a natural tunnel. The rubber plantations, the tea plantations and the other forests and jungles that sit by and pave the way for you are an absolute delight to watch as you drive away.

A9 road to Jaffna

The A9 road to Jaffna begins in Kandy which is in the central province of Sri Lanka. The road is not a highway but the construction is good that it allows you to drive with ease. There are so many things you can see as you drive along this route as you get to witness how towns and villages change as you drive towards the north. After a devastating civil war which lasted for almost 3 decades, the East and North of the island has now settled down and started developing slowly. The change of the types of trees, the change in the weather and the change of the boards that display the names of shops have a significant difference as you go more towards the north. The countryside is beautiful and serene welcoming you to get away from the busy urban life.

Galle road

The Galle road is the road that leads from Colombo Galle Face to Galle in the Southern province. The road is not a highway but it is absolutely enchanting to drive along the Galle road. Starting from urban Colombo where the roads are lined with skyscrapers and massive structures. The road then becomes wider and welcoming as you head out of Colombo. The road then runs along the coastline with the stunning blue sea on one side and the houses of villager’s are lined up inland of the road.
