It is a little known fact that Pattaya offers far more than simply beaches and nightlife. Lovers of history will be thrilled to know that there are many places in Pattaya steeped in history.

Buddha Mountain

Also known as Khao Chi Chan, the stunning Buddha Mountain is famous for it's the engraving of Buddha on its northern face. The engraving is over 100 metres in height and approximately 70 metres wide and lined with gold. Using web software and lasers, the image was etched at night time in the mid-1990s. As the grounds at the base of Buddha engraving include a temple, it is recommended that visitors wear modest clothing.

The Sanctuary of Truth

If you are compiling a list of things to do while checking for Pattaya hotel deals, the Sanctuary of Truth must be added to the list. This is a breathtaking structure made completely of teak which was erected as a sanctuary to philosophical truth. Photography lovers cannot miss the opportunity to roam around this beautiful complex. Covered in astonishingly intricate carvings, the building stands as a testament to the artistic prowess of Thai craftsmen. Interestingly, the construction of the sanctuary began in 1981 and has never ended as craftsmen are constantly adding to the building. An admission fee is charged but tours are free.

Vihara Sien Pattaya

It is hard to miss the majestic Chinese temple that is Viharn Sien, which is officially known as Anek Kuson Sala. The name Vihara Sien due to the large collection of Chinese saints within the temple as the word 'sien' means saints. The temple was a gift to King Rama IX and exhibits artefacts that have deep religious significance for both the Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist sects. Regardless of whether you are a practitioner of Buddhism, a visit to Vihara Sien cannot be missed. Apart from being considered an architectural masterpiece, it is also home to Chinese artefacts which are exhibited in an area styled like an ancient Chinese palace hall. The exhibits include a 2000-year-old figurine of a soldier on a horse which was excavated from Emperor Qin Shi Huang's tomb.

Wat Phra Yai Temple

Perched on the top of Pratumnak Hill is a serenely smiling 18 meters tall golden Buddha. Considered to be the largest Buddha in the region, the Buddha and the Wat Phra Yaj temple complex was erected in the 1940s. A visit to the pavilion hall will reveal stunning mosaics on the walls. Even the staircase leading up to the temple is unusual as intricately carved golden dragons are entwined on the handrails and seven-headed mythical snake statues line the foot of the stairs. Visitors who want to partake in the religious ceremonies can release birds, obtain blessings from monks or ring the bells to usher in good luck. The Wat Phra Yai Temple is centrally located and within easy reach of Pattaya hotels such as Travelodge Pattaya.

Pattaya Floating Market

Pattaya's Four Regions Floating Markets houses items from the northern, northeastern, central and southern parts of Thailand. Needless to say, this is a melting pot of each region's cultures. Strolls down the river bank or a boat ride will give you a chance to take in the wooden houses lining the river embodies the historic architectural styles of the four regions. Those interested in wood carving can also visit the wood carving museum and the markets also offer toys popular during ancient times that were built from wood or die-cast metals; ideal souvenirs for history buffs!
