According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Intellectual Property refers to creations of the mind such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce. The protection of such rights emerged during 500 BC and evolved with time to meet the requirements of the present day. Today, a specialized agency of the United Nations – the World Intellectual Property Organization, in conjunction with many treaties promulgated by the World Trade Organization play a vital role in protecting the Intellectual Property Rights worldwide. The protection of Intellectual Property Rights gains its basis from the principles of Natural Rights as mentioned in Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Accordingly, a person has the right to benefit from the protection of moral and material interests resulting from authorship of scientific, literary or artistic productions.

In 1999, the Director General of the National Algerian Institute for Industrial Property (INAPI) proposed the institutionalization of an international day for intellectual property with the aim of creating awareness about Intellectual Property Rights and in turn promoting innovation throughout the world. In 1999, the Chinese delegation to WIPO proposed the adoption of the “World Intellectual Property Day”, which was in the same year approved by the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization. Consequently, in 2000, the World Intellectual Property Day was launched and from then it is celebrated every year on April 26, it is also known as “World IP Day”. This date marks the day on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization came into force in 1970. There is a theme that is associated with the World IP Day every year and this time (2019) it is “Reach for Gold: IP and Sports”.
