Infographics – the magnificent seven

Infographics are a great way to grab your attention. They look so simple but are highly effective, as they simplify complicated subjects into bite-sized chunks. Good infographics always present statistics in an eye-catching, easy-to-understand way. Having a good content strategy is crucial to creating interesting and appealing content. Here are seven infographics we love.

1. The impact of plastic bag usage

Did you know 100,000 marine animals are killed each year due to plastic-bag pollution? This infographic is great as it highlights the impact plastic-bag usage is having on our environment, while showing you ways to minimise this. For example, by recycling one ton of plastic, 685 gallons of oil will be saved.

2. Virtually all food brands in the world are owned by just 10 companies

This infographic will surprise you. Who knew that so many brands were owned by just a handful of companies? Unilever, for example, has a vast portfolio of brands, owning household names including Marmite, Ben & Jerry’s and Pot Noodle – all brands with a healthy market share. The infographic is cleverly designed, giving the viewer an at-a-glance picture of which company owns which brand.

3. It’s never too late to learn

This infographic is great, it provides a very powerful and striking message. It offers the motivational message that it’s never too old to learn. To many of the viewers, they may not have known these statistics. Vera Wang, arguably one of the most famous wedding-dress designers, had not even designed anything until the age of 39.

4. Try experimenting with your food

This food-based infographic offers useful and easy tips for a healthy diet. Although primarily aimed at people with Type 2 diabetes, it contains sound advice for everyone, recommending a balanced diet of 50% vegetables, 25% lean protein and 25% starch/grain, as well as small amounts of healthy fats such as olive oil and avocado. A simple but effective infographic.

5. The power of the customer

This infographic highlights the importance of customer service in the whole customer experience. For example, 78% of consumers have walked away from making a purchase due to bad service. With this figure being so high, anyone who works in retail or the service industry should read this infographic for some useful tips.

6. Deskercise tips to keep you active

Sitting at a desk all day doesn’t mean you can’t do any exercise, and this infographic offers useful tips to keep active. It’s great if you don’t have time for the gym, for example. With exercises such as side swivels and chair dips, it has never been easier to exercise from the comfort of your desk. The strong use of colour is particularly effective here, too.

7. Do you know how long these materials take to decompose?

You might think that some materials, such as plastic, take years to decompose. Well, here’s a stat to shock you: styrofoam never decomposes. There is currently huge interest in environmentally sound materials and this infographic clearly shows the worst offenders, such as glass bottles, which while recyclable, still take 500 years to break down.

Infographics are a powerful way to cut through jargon while conveying a strong message. The great thing about them is that they grab the viewer’s attention, making it likely for people to like and share them – that’s why they’re such a valuable part of your content armoury.
