Creating a custom search engine for students is a terrific way for teachers to insure researchers are using exactly the sites they want them to, and Google makes it easy to generate a CSE and then put it on a webpage, wiki or LMS for use.
My school subscribes to Britannica's online edition and it's still the go-to site for all budding researchers, particularly when the subscription has three levels: Elementary, Middle and High School. Don't mistake this with the free version - this is the deluxe model that everyone should use.
