How does a water softener convert hard water to soft water ?

A water softener trade the minerals - calcium and magnesium for sodium. This process is called as ion exchange. The tank of a water softener contains small polystyrene beads, also known as resin or zeolite which causes the exchange of ions in water, thereby converting hard water to soft water.

Both calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) in hard water carry positive charges. This means that these minerals will cling to the resin beads which are negatively charged as the hard water passes through it.

When all the available sodium ions have been replaced with calcium or magnesium ions, the resin must be re-charged, or as it is more commonly known regenerated by eluting the Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions using a solution of sodium chloride (brine solution).

In this way the unit can continue to soften the water by simply regenerating it periodically when it becomes exhausted using a salt water brine solution.

Desalination is the process that separates salts and minerals from saline water. Feedwater sources to our desalination system may include brackish water, seawater, wastewater and water from industrial feed.

Saltwater is desalinated to produce water suitable for human consumption or irrigation. The only by-product of desalination is brine which is concentrated salt water.

In the SWRO process, the membrane allows desalinated water to pass through while inhibiting the passage of dissolved salts. Applying saline water to the membrane results in a freshwater product stream and a concentrated brine reject stream. Reverse osmosis membranes come in a variety of configurations. Deionization often called as DI, is the removal of all dissolved minerals and salts from water through the process of ion exchange.
