21st Century 8th-Grade Learners

The following lessons were designed to develop 21st-century learning skills in 8th grade students.

Leadership: What Makes a Leader?

Students will identify characteristics of leadership by researching great leaders. Students will then reflect on leaders in their own lives.

Digital Literacy: This Just In! | Common Sense Education

How should we react to breaking news? Students will analyze breaking news to identify clues of false or incomplete information.

Students learn the importance of writing emails with the audience in mind, along with email etiquette. Then students will learn how to use the internet to efficiently research.

Emotional Intelligence: How is Social Emotional Learning Part of Digital Citizenship Responsibilities

Students will create a Symbaloo page about the basics of social emotional learning.

Students will complete a challenge to test their entrepreneurial skills. Students will then reflect on what skills are needed to be a good entrepreneur and how experiencing failure provides opportunities.

Global Citizenship: Action for Change

Students will study three real-life study cases to critically think about how to take action as global citizens.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: The Quandary Game

In this problem solving lesson plan, students use a free online game called Quandary to practice ethics, critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Students will learn what it means to be a part of a team and why being a good team player is important for career success.
