5 Tips to keep your Creative feet on top

If you happen to be a creative in fields such as art, writing, and designing, you will eventually face struggles such as a writer’s/art block, and to combat this I have 5 tips that you can add in your day-to-day routine.

1

Write a full page in your notebook upon waking up.

Write a full page in your notebook upon waking up.

Borrowed from Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, writing a page after waking up will help your chisel your motivations in thinking and creating; your writing segment does not have to be anything perfect or fancy, the point is to keep yourself at bay with putting ideas down upon thinking them.

The same can apply with sketching / illustrating.

The same can apply with sketching / illustrating.

With an artist, this is an opportunity to get imaginative with whatever picture you have in mind. This also serves as an opportunity to practice and sharpen your skills at what element of drawing you’re attempting to get good at.

3

Go piece by piece.

Go piece by piece.

This in a way is me telling you to take your time with what ideas you’re coming up with. If say you happen to be writing a story with characters and setting, the best you can do without overwhelming yourself as well as hit the block is to slow down, focus on developing one thing such as characters today and setting tomorrow. Once those are settled, they should fall into place with wherever you want the story to progess.

4

Take a break once in a while, strategically.

Take a break once in a while, strategically.

I wouldn’t use a break to escape work, personally with me I would be deep within break to the point where I would be procrastinate and then descend into laziness. If your block is that bad, I’d say give yourself one day, which will lead to the last tip here:

5

Immerse yourself in other aspects of media.

It’s easy of me to say immerse yourself in the outdoors (do do that), but a break is a great opportunity to engage in other inspirational forms of art, from reading another book, watching a movie deviating from Hollywood norms, and of course: the outdoors and exercise.
