Four of the Most Common Eye Diseases

Worried about contracting an eye disease or just interested in keeping your vision clear for life? Below are some of the most common eye diseases and some recommendations for how to avoid eye complications and eye surgery.

1

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis

Also known as pink eye, conjunctivitis is an extremely common eye problem throughout the world. The eye becomes infected and causes a pinkish appearance in the eye. The main causes of conjunctivitis are viral or bacterial infections. Some of the uncomfortable symptoms include burning, swelling of the eyes and itching.

2

Corneal Abrasion

Corneal Abrasion

Dust, smoke, leaf particles or anything else floating around in the air can cause a scratch on the corneal layer of the eye; also called a corneal abrasion. Although eye surgery is not necessary, treatment is often necessary for the eye to heal and the patient should refrain from straining their eyes until the wound has healed.

3

Cataracts

Cataracts

Cataracts may be the result of an injury or from protein deterioration over time that causes the fluid inside the eye’s lens to cloud. Cataracts get worse over time and can eventually cause blindness. In Utah there are many clinics that perform eye surgery and, in many cases, can completely heal the eye.

4

Glaucoma

Glaucoma

This disease is most commonly associated with age and diabetes. Glaucoma is a condition that leads to optic nerve damage caused by intraocular pressure which prevents old fluids from draining from the eye. Eye surgery is often recommended for patients with Glaucoma.
