For a bit of background, April is Autism Awareness Month, and fidget toys are a commonly used tool for autistic and other neurodivergent students. These toys help them focus in class, calm down in stressful situations, and regulate sensory information around them.
This behavior is known as "stimming," and to an extent we all stim in our daily lives. Behaviors like tapping a pencil, bouncing your leg, and playing with your hair all help us ground ourselves and process the information around us.
For individuals on the autistic or ADHD spectrum, stimming is essential for comfort, focus, and understanding.
Some common examples of fidget toys that you've probably heard of are fidget spinners and fidget cubes. At this program we will be hand-making some simpler toys out of common household items. PLEASE come out and support a great cause!
