5 Best things to do on Koh Phangan – Discover the unseen side of Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is one of Thailand's most popular islands because of the legendary Full Moon parties that it hosts every year. Here are 5 of the best things you can do while visiting Koh Phangan.

1

Take a bath in the waterfalls

The island of Koh Phangan has some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Thailand. The Than Sadet waterfall, located on the eastern area of the island and the Phaeng Waterfall, located north of the town of Thong Sala are 2 of the most popular waterfalls that are visited by most of the tourists visiting the island. The rainy season of Thailand is a great time to visit the Phaeng waterfall as during this period many natural pools that are great places for cooling down on a hot day form at the bottom of this waterfall.

2

Enjoy the beautiful sunset

The west coast of Koh Phangan is where you can catch some of the most stunning and picturesque sunsets while visiting Thailand. There are even certain places on the south coast that provide an equally great or better view of the sunset as the west coast. The sunset bars that open during the evening and stay open towards the early hours of the morning are a great place to sip a cold drink, lean back and enjoy the sunset. The fun doesn't end when the sunsets as most of the bars blast funky beats that you can groove to all night long.

3

Explore the beaches

Even though Koh Phangan is a small island it is home to more than 30 beaches. The bottle beach that is located near Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas, a chic and luxurious Koh Phangan Resort, Full Moon Beach and Haad Rin Nok are some of the island's most popular beaches that see lots of tourists. Malibu Beach, Haad Mae Haad and Haad Chao Pao, on the other hand, are some of the secluded beaches that don't see as many tourists as the more popular beaches.

4

Take a hike to the top of Khao Rao

At a height of 627 metres, Khao Rao is the tallest mountain located in Koh Phangan. You won't need your hiking gear to reach the top of this mountain as the terrain is relatively easy to handle with the exception of a few places. Hikers don't have to get worried about getting lost as there are plenty of signboards that guide them to the top of the mountain. Climbing this mountain doesn't require lots of effort and can be completed with 2-3 hours. Make sure to pack plenty of water though as the humidity in the jungle is much higher than around the beaches. On reaching the top of the mountain you'll be greeted with a gorgeous view of Koh Ma and the bay of Chaloklum.

5

Full Moon Party

The island's main attraction, the full Moon party is an event of epic proportion that features neon tattoos, heart-pounding music and thrilling light shows. The party is attended by more than 30,000 people during its main season and the island is hence known as the party island by locals and foreigners. Make sure to book your hotel and ticket in advance to avoid disappointment as it'll be next to impossible to book a hotel close to the event. If you do miss the Full Moon party however there are some other parties which are hosted in Koh Phangan that you can attend similar to Jungle experience, Half moon party, black moon culture and Waterfall party.
