This video is a fan-made book trailer for Lois Lowry's The Giver. I chose this video to entice excitement in my students to dive into the book and also get a general idea of the book's plot. I think the visual aspect will engage different types of students, so I plan to include this at the beginning of my Hyperdoc.
This video defines utopias and dystopias, as well as investigates how a utopia might become a dystopia. I chose this video because it explains the topic of Utopia vs. Dystopia (a central theme in The Giver) well. The video aspect also caters to visual and audio learners.
Canva is a graphic design website that gives the creator the freedom to choose their own layout and design elements. I chose this link as a tool for students to use when they create their own book cover for The Giver. I think Canva is a cool, free, online tool that allows for artistic learners to express their knowledge.
This is an edited transcript from Reading Rockets' interview with Lois Lowry. I chose this link because I think it's important to know the author's intent when reading a novel. This interview also mentions some interesting takes on The Giver and brings up the issue of censory and banned books.
This is a site containing a career quiz for the careers described in the book. I chose this as a fun activity for students to do. There is a couple spelling mistakes in the quiz, so I might make my own and share that with my class instead.
This is a video of leading voices in children's literature sharing reflections on Lois Lowry's The Giver at the annual National Council of Teachers of English. I chose this video because I found it inspiring. I want to show students the effect books can have on readers, even throughout many years.
This is an education site with a short summary of The Giver in sequenced events. I will link this in my hyperdoc to make sure my students understand the sequence of events in the novel before they complete the assignment where they write an alternate ending.
This is a quote from Lois Lowry's Newberry acceptance speech for The Giver. I chose this quote because I want students to think about how this quote relates to the novel and then explain in an assignment.
This is the first trailer to the movie adaptation of The Giver. I chose to use this resource so students can compare aspects seen in the movie trailer to the novel. This also gives faces to names and helps visual learners enjoy their reading experience.
This is a podcast where three speakers interact with the novel and share their thoughts. I chose this because I love the idea of introducing podcasts into my classroom. I think this will really aid audio learners in engaging with the text and add extra insight into the novel they might not have received from me or their peers.
