Most researchers would like to be able to learn from their current project how to do an even better job writing their next survey. One way to do this is dropout analysis. Dropout analysis tells you where people who do not finish your survey decided to leave it. A dropout analysis report can provide valuable insight as to what kinds of questions might cause people to leave. Since the primary goal of dropout analysis is to find where people leave your survey, the most important piece of information on the report is how many people quit the survey at each question. Quitting is usually defined as not answering any further questions. The rest of the report should help you determine why people quit at questions that have an unusually large number leaving. Sometimes the wording of a question could be complicated, and that might cause people to want to leave. Other times, a question just might be too long, causing some people to lose interest. Other times a question might be about sensitive topics, such as sexual practices or disease, drug use and other topics some people might not want to discuss. For these reasons a dropout analysis report should show the full text of each question. Another key piece of information that should appear on the report is whether each question is required or not. Researchers usually wish they could require answers to all questions, and sometimes that is what you really must do. But it does, the cost that if someone does not understand a question, know how to answer a question or is offended by a question, requiring them to answer it is likely to cause them to quit the survey, even if they might have wanted to continue if they could have simply left that question unanswered. The report should also include the basic type of question. Is it a multiple-choice question, which presents people with a list of labeled answers? Is it a numeric question which asks for a number as the answer? Is it a grid or matrix question which presents several related questions down the side of a grid and answer choices across the top? Or is it a question asking for a comment? For example, grids are a very visually efficient way to group similar questions together. They may make a survey seem shorter, but some people do find them more complicated than a series of multiple-choice questions, so they could potentially be a reason people quit a survey. Another piece of information that can be helpful is showing the percentage answering each question in relation to the number of people that answer the question before. This isn't necessarily dropping out or quitting a survey. People might continue with the survey, even if they don't answer particular question. Seeing which questions people don't answer can potentially point you to ones you might want to consider changing or even eliminating in future surveys. In all cases you should consider the population you are surveying when viewing the dropout analysis report. Certain reasons for dropping out of a survey, such as complicated questions might cause a higher percentage of some types of people to drop out than other types. Similarly, a question that offends some kinds of people might not offend other kinds of people. As you can see, survey software that provides dropout analysis can help you be a better researcher.
