Tissamaharama is a town in the Southern province in the Hambantota district that is mainly known for the Tissa wewa and the Tissamaharama temple

Tissa Wewa

The Tissa wewa is undoubtedly the most important and popular attraction in Tissamaharama which is a huge artificial lake that has been built in the good old days by one of the kings who ruled Sri Lanka in order to develop the paddy field cultivation by increasing the water supply that is been given to Tissamaharama city. After many years the Tissa Wewa is still the jewel of the city which brings adornment to the area. Due to the lake there is flora and fauna growing abundantly and if you are in the area it is a must to visit the Tissa Wewa in order to take a glimpse at this giant construction.

Tissa Dagoba

This pagoda is also one of the most important sights in Tissamaharama. The Dagobah is located within the Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya and is said to have been built around 200 BC by king Kavantissa. This temple is known to be one of the first four major Buddhist monasteries that were established in Sri Lanka after the arahant Mahinda Thera arrived in the island. Legend has it that Lord Buddha himself spent time meditating in this temple with 500 other bikkus during his third visit to the island. Museum

This unnamed museum which is next to another pagoda known as the Yatala Wehera contains so many hidden treasures, but it is overlooked as a tourist site by many. It shows the development in the systems in the golden age even though these techniques and practices did not surface during the modern day. There is a very decorative and ancient bidet which is on display which used to demonstrate a very elaborate filtering system which minimised water pollution.

Yala National Park

Even though it is set a little far out this is bound to be one of the most sought after activities that you could do if you have time to spare while in Tissamaharama. Yala is the premium national park in Sri Lanka and you get to see sightings of leopards, bears, crocodiles, deer and many other animals when you go on game drives. Most Tissamaharama hotels are able to arrange tours to the national park as it is sought after excursions in Sri Lanka.

Bundala Bird paradise

Bundala is undoubtedly one of the most sought after locations in Sri Lanka for bird watching as there are more than 200 bird species that have been recorded in the area. Sri Lanka is at the end of the Indo-Asia flyway for migration which allows a lot of birds from Western Europe and even Eastern Europe to migrate to Sri Lanka to avoid the winter seasons in their countries.
