Do Workplace Wellness Programs Save Employers Money?
With health care expenditures soaring, there is increasing interest in workplace-based disease prevention and health promotion as a means of improving health while lowering costs. We conduct a critical meta-analysis of the literature on costs and savings associated such programs, focusing on studies with particularly rigorous methods and examining effects on health care costs and absenteeism.
Workplace wellness programs-which may include health risk screening, healthy lifestyle, and disease management components-are a big deal: They're a $6 billion industry. By 2012, half of businesses with 50 or more employees and over 90% of very large employers (> 50k employees) had implemented one. Moreover, the ACA includes provisions that encourage them.
