5 Foods to Avoid Before Spring Break

Summer is still six months away, but for college students swimsuit season comes early. Spring break is three months away. The cold Utah weather allows you to hide under sweaters, but don’t let that fool you into eating the wrong foods. Start preparing for swimsuit season now.Avoid these five foods that add inches to your waistline:

Drinking soda is a waste of calories. Not even Diet Soda is safe because it has artificial sugar. According to Live Strong, soft drinks are Americans biggest source of added sugar in their diets. It has no nutritional value, and leads to weight gain. By simply cutting out soda out of your diet you can lose up to one pound a month.

White bread is made out of refined grains. This means that the essential nutrients such as fiber, bran and germ are removed from the breads composition. What is left of the bread quickly spikes blood sugar, and causes the body to store the unneeded energy as fat.

Fast food is a recipe for weight gain.These high calorie meals contain large amounts of fat, sugar and salt. There are also studies linking fast food to the development of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance not only leads to weight gain, but serious health problems. No matter how busy you are with your college classes, avoid the fast food.

Not only is cheese high in calories, but is almost always is packed with saturated fat. The hardest part about cheese is that it’s added to many other foods. This raises the calorie and fat content to those foods, making them much worst for you. Don’t eat cheese plain, and avoid adding it to other foods whenever possible.

Dessert is probably the most obvious food to avoid on the list. It is usually made out of refined sugars, which leads to quick weight gain. Even reduced fat desserts need to be eaten in moderation. A healthy alternative for a sweet tooth is a piece of fruit. Spring Break will be here before you know it. Don’t let these foods keep you from hitting the beach with your friends!
