A surprising number of Utah residents do not know an adequate amount of the facts about their doctors, especially their eye doctors. Treat this like a checklist to ensure that your doctor has the unique medical skill set that you require as well as some proven competency in working with people. You need someone that you can trust to handle delicate health concerns.
Is your eye doctor an optometrist (non-medical doctor) or an ophthalmologist (went to medical school and possesses an M.D.)? Does he have a Ph.D as well? Why did he choose to specialize in ophthalmology or optometry? Is he licensed to practice in the state where you live?
Where did your eye doctor complete his undergraduate degree? Where did he go to medical school? Where did he do his residency?
Does your eye doctor own the practice/clinic? How long has your eye doctor been in practice? In how many different locations has your eye doctor worked? Does he accept your insurance?
Does your eye doctor work with children? Does your eye doctor work with senior citizens? Does your eye doctor work with a partner or partners? If so, who are they and will you ever be treated by them instead? How many patients does your doctor have? How large is his medical staff? What are the qualifications of your doctor’s staff? How often will you be treated by the doctor himself as opposed to by various assistants and/or aides?
Does your doctor have any special certifications? Did he participate in any fellowships? Does he participate in any research? What is his marital status? Does he have children? What is your eye doctor’s policy when it comes to your emergency or after hours needs? Does your doctor h have any policies or office procedures that are different from other eye doctors?
