A beautiful and all round incredible city, it can still be a mystery to most who visit it. It is Australia's second largest city and is home to some amazing locations of interest. Here are some things to know.

Melbourne is the capital of a state called Victoria.

Melbourne is home to around 4 million people and is the capital of the state of Victoria. Melbourne's city centre is called the Central Business District but is known mostly as the CBD. This is where you will find Flinders St Station which is one of the city's most popular landmarks, along with the River Yarra that flows through it. There are two main modes of public transport I

In Melbourne, you'll find that there are two main modes of transport. Firstly, you've got the trains that serve both the outer and inner suburbs. Secondly, you have the city trams which are more famous as they can be seen transporting people all across the city. The most popular tram is the free City Circle tram (route number 35) which loops the CBD and stops directly at or close to most of the city's popular attractions. There is also a free shuttle bus service in operation along with this tram.

It's the unofficial sporting capital of Australia

Third, on this list of things to know about Melbourne is that the city is also the unofficial sporting capital of the country. Without a doubt, the most popular venue here is the Melbourne Cricket Ground, mostly referred to as the MCG. When this place packs up, it accommodates around 100,000 people. Even though it is called the Melbourne Cricket Ground, you'll also find Aussie Rules Football right here. Various other famous sporting grounds here include the Rod Laver Arena which is where the Australian Open tennis final is usually played, as well at the Flemington Racecourse, which is where the ever-popular Melbourne Cup horse race takes place. If you're searching for hotels, Southbank has plenty of good options like the WRAP on Southbank for instance.

Devote some time to Federation Square

Found in Central Melbourne, right opposite the road from Flinders St Station is Federation Square, which is better known as Fed Square. This is a cultural and entertainment centre that should most definitely be on your list to visit. The main attraction found here is the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. Here, you'll find various exhibits that are definitely worth spending a couple of hours checking out. Right at Fed Square, you'll also come across a part of the National Gallery of Victoria known as the Ian Potter Centre. This is the first major gallery in the entire world that is purely dedicated to Australian art. If you're lucky enough, you'll be treated to some exciting free entertainment. One of the biggest highlights here is that there is free Wi-Fi all throughout the entirety of the square.
