The best 10 things to in Glenelg – Discover an underappreciated city

It is the general belief that a small town like Glenelg would not have a lot of things that tourists can do, but you will be surprised at the number of activities that are available in Glenelg.

1

Glenelg Visitor Centre

Glenelg Visitor Centre is bound to give you a lot of details about the history of the town. The white sandy beaches and the delightful food is a result of Glenelg being an old settlement area which started in 1836. If you are staying at a location such as the Oaks Plaza Pier you can always ask the staff to arrange a tour as that would give you more information.

2

Glenelg Art Gallery

The Glenelg Art Gallery is a great place to go have a calm and peaceful morning. You get to see a lot of different works of art from all around the world. There are workshops being held every week and depending on the turn out they even do portraits of the visitors.

3

Bay Discovery Centre

The Bay Discovery Centre is the place to be if you are a history buff, art lover and someone who is interested in socialising and learning more details about the people, occupations, art and history of Glenelg in general. The museum holds a lot of information in detail about Glenelg's social history.

4

Old Gum Tree Reserve

The Old Gum tree which is also known as The Proclamation Tree is a historically important location in Glenelg. It was near this tree in 1836 that John Hindmarch delivered the proclamation speech of establishing the government. An annual event is now held here on Proclamation Day.

5

Glenelg Pier

The area where the Glenelg Pier is located is also popular for accommodation. Glenelg Pier was built in 1859 but a lot of destruction happened which resulted in the lighthouse, the jetty and the aquarium getting destroyed in a fire and a hurricane. The jetty that can be seen now was rebuilt in 1969.

6

Proclamation Trail

This is a self-guided walk which begins at the Glenelg Town Hall and then leads one through eight different sites with information about each and every location. The locations are not situated far apart so you can even walk along these locations or you could cycle your way through the tour.

7

Haigh's Chocolates

The tour through this family owned chocolatier is one of the best activities you can take in Glenelg. This family has been in the business for many generations as they are well known in and around Australia for being able to remake old recipes and for being able to come up with new chocolate recipes.

8

Beachouse

The Beachouse is bound to be the best location for kids as it is full of different waterslides, games, rides and activities that can involve the whole family. It is a location where you can easily spend a whole day where the entire group gets to have a lot of fun as a family.

9

Dolphin Cruise

This is the perfect excursion for the animal lovers as you get to become up close and personal with Dolphins as you get to see pods of Dolphins swimming towards the boats instead of swimming away. You will also get to feed them and watch them dance in glee.

10

Marina Pier

The Marina Pier is for those who want to take a nice long stroll to enjoy the surrounding and environment in Glenelg. If you would like to make an evening out of it there are many restaurants lined up along the Marina and you can sit and wind down enjoying the stunning view.
