Being a tropical island, Sri Lanka has more than a thousand kilometres of coastline around it. It is thus no surprise that there are so many amazing beaches to visit in the country.

Arugam Bay

This spot is one of the most laid back beaches you will find in your travels, and is among the top surfing locations in the island. The remote town is always full of travellers enjoying a relaxing holiday and surfers who make it their home; the vibes here are amazing.

This is another beach that is good for surfing, and is accommodating to beginners, with plenty of space and resources for learning. This is one beach you won't want to forget to bring your camera to, as the stilt fishermen who use a unique method to catch fish close to the coast make an amazing sight against the stunning ocean backdrop.

Negombo

Easily accessible from Colombo, and just a few kilometres from the airport, this is a fantastic place for a holiday, especially if you have just a few hours on the island. There a many luxurious hotels and quality restaurants along the coast, and the vibrant culture makes this spot a favourite among tourists. It can get crowded at times, but there is plenty of space to chill out.

While the beach in Galle may not be among the most breath taking in the island, it is still a must visit because of the immense historical of the city, which has made it one of the country's most popular hubs among visitors. Walk along the beach near the grand Galle Fort, or check out the fishing boats, and maybe even help local fishermen pull in their catch as they return from their expeditions out at sea.

An idyllic stretch of Beach, this spot is more suited for visitors travelling with their families or looking for a quiet holiday, rather than the party goers. There is much to do in the surrounding area, from visiting the famous turtle hatchery, to exploring the wildlife in the mangroves nearby.
