The top 7 national parks to visit in Sri Lanka - Get one with nature!

When you think of travelling to Sri Lanka, what's the first thing you think of? The wildlife, right? Well, don't worry, you are not alone there – everybody does.

1

Udawalawe National Park

The expanse of 119 square miles is the perfect oasis for many forms of wildlife. There are about 400 odd elephants which of course is the guarantee of sighting them. To add to the allure of the park, there's also a reservoir – namely Walawe Reservoir – amid the park. The reservoir is a famous playground, especially for baby elephants. You can see them wandering around enjoying their time. You can also see around 180 forms of birdlife. Udawalawe National Park is usually included in Sri Lankan guided tours.

2

Gal Oya National Park

The park expands over a land area of 100 square miles. The water bodies, grasslands and forests are the perfect combination for the exuberant wildlife found there. At the park, you will sight leopards, langurs, monkeys and over 100 forms of birdlife. If you are going for a tour package with Cinnamon Nature Trails, most of these parks will be included in their travel schedule.

3

Sinharaja Forest

The UNESCO world heritage site is a natural marvel to behold. The biodiversity that enrichens the forest is what's alluring to nature lovers. You can witness many endemic bird species as well as migrant ones.

4

Minneriya National Park

The park ranges over 30 square miles and is a repository of thick bushes and grasslands. The most suitable time for visits would be between June and September. The best spectacle you will witness at the park is the flocks of elephants gathering near Minneriya reservoir to enjoy their time.

5

Pigeon Island

Scuba divers are familiar with the place as it provides them with a perfect diving site. Pigeon Island is one of the marine parks found in the country. The park is located off Trincomalee coast with rock pigeons scattered all over. The island was considered to be a sanctuary back in 1963, and in 2003 it was established a national park in the country. If you are planning to visit Pigeon Island, make sure you plan your travels between April and September.

6

Gal Oya

This is where you will find the largest man-made reservoir in the country, Senanayake Samudraya. Gal Oya National Park is said to be a most unadulterated national park in the country. You can go for a boat ride to the centre of the lake and go to the island for a picnic. This is also an opportunity to have an encounter with the indigenous people in the country.

7

Yala National Park

The park is segregated into five regions, and two of them are open to visitors. Often called the leopard country, leopards are the most prevalent feature of the park. This is not to say that leopards are the only form of wildlife you can see there. There are also herds of elephants, peacocks and hundreds of other beings. Yala was established a national park in 1983. The park is an expanse between the coast and the jungle and is located southeast of Colombo.
