Planning a hunting trip? A good hunt is a safe hunt. There are endless amounts of things that could go wrong. Be sure you have gone over some of the necessary rules so that everyone in your party is on the same page for gun safety, and everyone can get home in one peace. Here are some tips for a successful day.
Count all the people in your hunting party. Take note of the number and make sure everyone is aware of what that number is. Assign everyone a friend so that all who came are accounted for. If you have people on the trip who aren’t hunting, make sure they are in site at all times and aware of the rules.
This seems obvious but take time to overview the weapons you are using throughout the day. Go over gun safety, once the guns are out of the safe at home, they must be secure, and unloaded as you travel to the site. It would be a tragedy for someone to get shot. This happens all the time. Don’t be careless, stress to the group that weapons should be treated as if they are loaded at all times. Don’t point them at people, and don’t point them at a target until you are ready to shoot. This will keep injuries at bay.
Wear a blaze orange cap, or vest, so that you are not mistaken for an animal and shot. It is also recommended that if the lighting is dim, keep a small flashlight on so others recognize you as human.
According to the National Safety Council’s study of outdoor recreation related injuries, sports like soccer, and football cause more injuries then hunting. However, strive to keep statistics of injuries down and always be alert and prepared.
