Twenty Things You Need To Know Before Getting a Cat

Take a look at some of the things that you need to know before getting a cat for the first time. As annoying as they are, they really do become part of the family!

1

The cat sitting on you is a valid excuse to do nothing

The cat sitting on you is a valid excuse to do nothing

There seems to be a strange mutual understanding that grows among the family after getting a cat. That is the understanding that, if the cat is sitting/lying on you, you have a valid excuse to do nothing. Need a coffee? Ask your partner to get it for you. Afterall, you can't disturb the cat!

2

They’ll ask to go out and then stare at you

They’ll ask to go out and then stare at you

The cats sat at the door meowing again. He must want to go outside. You go over to the door and open it slowly. Do you know what the cat does? He sits there. He just sits there staring out at the world dumbfoundedly. And you just know he’ll start meowing again once you close the door.

3

They meow louder than you’d think

They meow louder than you’d think

We always think of cats as small creatures that rely on us to look after them, but honestly, sometimes I think my cat has bigger balls than me! I’ll do whatever you want just stop making that incessant noise!

4

They’ll come to the toilet with you

They’ll come to the toilet with you

Cats are, well, cats. They have no concept of privacy. If you are heading to the toilet in the morning, then you can be assured that the cat will follow. Just don't make eye contact.

5

They will sit in front of your screen

They will sit in front of your screen

Now this may not be the case with every cat, but a lot of cats have the habit of sitting directly in from of the computer or television screen! Annoying, right? Most of the time they just want attention…

6

They do scratch...sometimes

They do scratch...sometimes

One minute the cat will be purring away and cuddling up against you and then, BAM, it strikes you. Cats are infamously temperamental, so try not to take it too personally.

7

They can be super playful

They can be super playful

The younger cats are always a lot more energetic and playful than you would initially think! This is great, as it means that you can play with them. But watch out, it can get a little tiring!

8

Your sofa will be pulled apart

Your sofa will be pulled apart

After getting a cat, some of your furniture may start looking a little bit worse for wear! Our sofa ended up being the perfect scratch post. Luckily, we ended up using a pet promo code to save money on a proper scratch post. The cat still uses the sofa.

9

They get strange obsessions with certain human foods

They get strange obsessions with certain human foods

I once had a cat that was totally obsessed with yogurts. Yeah, you heard that right. I would put a bowl full of gourmet food out for the cat, then kick back on the sofa with my yogurt. The cat was all over me! The gourmet food didn't stand a chance against Yeo Valley.

10

They really don't like the cat carrier

They really don't like the cat carrier

Need to transport your cat from one place to another? Good luck! Cats really don't like to be put in their cat carriers! Forget coaxing them in with biscuits, you’re going to have to catch the poor thing!

11

The vet is expensive

The vet is expensive

I guess this is one of the pitfalls of having a furry little friend. They’re vet bills sure can cost a lot of money. Be prepared for that!

12

Fur balls are real

Fur balls are real

You know the animated way that puss in boots coughs up his fur balls in shrek? Yeah, its real. Cat’s fur balls are pretty gross, so try to let him outside to do his business!

13

They do malt on things

They do malt on things

It's time to invest in some double sided sticky tape! Cats do malt, and they will most probably do it in the most inconvenient place possible. Planning on wearing that little black dress out later? The cat just had a three hour nap on it. Good luck.

14

Whoever has the biscuits is the favourite

Whoever has the biscuits is the favourite

As much as you want your cat to love you for who you are, they are ultimately animals. They will love whoever in the family feeds them the most treats. So make sure you always have some with you!

15

Padding can be painful

Padding can be painful

You know that thing that cats do when they are feeling super comfortable? When they move their paws on you as if kneading dough? Well, buddy, that sure can hurt! Cats have claws, and even though they are showing affection, it can seriously hurt sometimes!

16

Get Ready to Cuddle

Get Ready to Cuddle

As much as I hate to admit it, I do love a good old cuddle with the cat. Well, if you are getting your own feline friend anytime soon then get ready for some serious cuddles!

17

They Will Probably Poop in the Shower

They Will Probably Poop in the Shower

Weird, I know. Why do cats always poop in the shower? This is actually very common, I think because a shower basin somewhat resembles a litter tray (maybe?). I don't know. Either way, cats have a funny habit of doing the number two in showers.

18

They Will Wake You Up

They Will Wake You Up

Used to having a nice full night’s of sleep? That could be over! Plenty of cats move around during the night, and if you don't have a cat flap then they may just sit by the door meowing for the entire night...great.

19

They Will Lick Your Face

They Will Lick Your Face

Getting a cat soon? Well get ready to have the sandpaper tongue on a young feline drag across your face as you are trying to sleep. It is kinda cute, but also super annoying too!

20

They are 100% a fully integrated member of the family

They are 100% a fully integrated member of the family

The funny thing about getting pets is that you really do get to know them. You begin to get annoyed at them, roll your eyes at them and even bicker with them like you would with a human family member. And after it all, you’ll curl up on the sofa together and watch TV. If you are getting a cat for the first time, then nothing will prepare you for just how much they become a part of your life. They are family.
