The Maldives holds the record for the world's first underwater cabinet meeting

Rising sea levels pose a big threat for a country like the Maldives which is spread out among coral islands. Several islands have already been evacuated due to rising sea levels and saltwater contamination in freshwater sources. In an effort to draw more attention to climate change, the Maldivian president along with 13 government officials held a cabinet meeting at the bottom of the sea. Adorned in scuba gear, they sat at desks that had been dropped to the sea floor and discussed projects to increase sustainability efforts around the country.

The kingdom was created by an exiled Indian prince

According to Maldivian legends, the first inhabitants were a peaceful community who worshipped the sun and sea. However, the first kingdom was founded by an Indian prince named Sri Soorudasaruna Adeettiya, who had been exiled to the islands by his father. The prince went on to establish the Adeetta Dynasty, also known as the Solar Dynasty. The dynasty ended when the queen of the Solar Dynasty married a prince of the Lunar Dynasty.

There are over 1,190 coral islands

The Maldives has over 1,190 coral islands that are collected in 26 atolls, out of which only 200 are inhabited islands along with 80 that are home to Maldives resorts. The archipelago is actually a part of an enormous structure called the Laccadives-Chagos Ridge, which covers over 2000 km.

It is an Islamic country with strict laws

The Maldives is a strict Islamic country, and even foreigners are required to follow their traditions when visiting. Alcohol can only be consumed in resorts and taking it off premises is illegal. During the holy month of Ramadan, tourists are expected to respect Muslim customs and not eat, drink or smoke during the day. However, some restaurants that are moved away from the main road may serve tourists and all hotels and resorts served food and beverages during Ramadan. Other laws that could affect tourist include are a ban on publicly practising another faith and sunbathing topless. Nudity is strictly frowned upon here, even on private resorts.

It's home to a spectacular underwater world

The Maldives has a vast network of coral reefs that are home to over 200 species of tropical fish, big game and plant life. At any point of the year, it is possible to spot whales and dolphins swimming near the reefs.
