History of Guangzhou

Located in South China Guangzhou has been an important port-city since the mighty Han Empire. The city has been the Guangdong provincial capital for the last 2000 years and is serviced by the Pearl River. It is a city that has seen much change over the years. By the year 206BC Guangzhou served as the capital for the Nanyue Kingdom. At first, the city was known as Panyu which is a derivation of the names of two mountains Pan and Yu located nearby. The Han Dynasty then took over the Nanyue Kingdom in 111BC making Guangzhou or Panyu the provincial capital - which it still is. By 226AD Panyu was named as the prefecture of the Guang Province.

Weather

Guangzhou sports a rather humid sub-tropical type of weather. The summer heats are extremely high while influenced by the East Asian monsoon, rainfall is quite heavy during the summer season. The heaviest rainfall is experienced between April and September. Winters are dry and quite mild. The last snowfall the city experienced was in January 1893. May to October are the hottest months with temperatures reaching highs of 37 degrees Celsius around September. January is the coldest month with temperatures dropping to 10 degrees Celsius.
