Sailing in Bali - Escape the buzz

Bali is a dream come true for the traveller looking for an escape. However, it is also one of the most popular tourist destinations that can somewhat hamper the experience.

1

It could be crowded

Bali is considered one of the hottest travel destinations in the world. This means that it is often crowded, and you need to figure out ways to discover those solitary spots of peace and relaxation. The main town of Bali where you would land after a flight is far from the idyllic scenery that you would expect. For that, you will need to go more inland, or towards one of the lesser known towns. Alternatively, you can take to the sea. Sailing across Indonesia and Bali is also a great way to see every good thing about the place while facing minimal hassle.

2

Finding a ship

There are many companies offering a Bali yacht charter or a simple tour on a functional boat. If you are into history and luxury, you can opt for something like Alila Purnama, which translates to Full Moon. True to its name, it is one of the best ways to sail in Bali, a ship that looks like something out of the proud history of the nation. Alternatively, you can hire standard tours if you have a small group of people and get around in more modern styled boats. If you are able to handle a boat on your own, you can even rent or hire a boat for a designated number of days. However, be careful when making such arrangements as you could easily be duped.

3

Check the package

If you are going for a pre-arranged sailing tour, make sure to check what is included in the package and what is not. Most of the larger barrages have a predetermined route, so you will not be able to stop wherever your fancy takes you. On the plus side, these type of tours is usually all-inclusive, with you having to pay separately only for alcohol and souvenirs and such items. Do make a point to check on meal plans, as some would charge extra for the meals. As you will be on a ship in the middle of the ocean, you will have little choice but to go with what is on the offer.

4

Prepare yourself

Going on a cruise means spending most of your time on the turbulent waters. If you are someone who gets seasick or is not sure if you get seasick, this might not be the place to test it out. Take the necessary medication from home, as you are unlikely to find any at short notice. Some of the larger ships would have a residential doctor in case of emergencies, but it is not a guarantee. Make sure that you are dressed for sailing. It takes more than what is often shown in the magazines and catalogues. The nights can be rather cold, so make sure to pack appropriate clothing. Sunblock, hats, and insect repellents would ideally be a part of your must-have items.
